“A feeling of sadness and longing that is not akin to pain,
and resembles the sorrow only as the mist resembles the rain” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Nostalgia is a tricky beast - it is often the rose-tinted glasses through which we view events of the past, but sometimes is the genuine wistful longing we feel when thinking of people and times that are no more. These memories that are tied into past feelings of love, and I think that many people revisit them from time to time, losing themselves in their reverie.
We’re nearing the end of our summer here in Australia, and perhaps it’s that my body feels Autumn slowly creeping around the corner, but lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the past - the friends I’ve gained and lost, the loves that have come and gone, and the way that time has ticked on relentlessly through it all. So many of the memories that we have are tied in with food. For example, bananas will forever remind me of the way I used to love mashing up overripe bananas with a little milk for my brother when he was still little enough to sit in a high chair, and chicken brings back the memory of the way my sister used to grab the thigh bone from a roast chook and use it in place of her dummy whilst crawling around on all fours because she still couldn’t walk.
So, my dear readers and fellow food-bloggers - I’d like to invite you to take a trip down memory lane and make a recipe that evokes a sense of nostalgia for you, and share the story of what memory ties itself to this particular food. Whether it’s a seemingly small event or something that was life-changing, there are no limits on what sort of memory or recipe is required for this event - just so long as it is something from your past

Ellie! What a great find is your blog! I just sent you an e-mail with a recipe from my childhood. Thanks!
Ellie, as the saying goes, great minds think alike. My new blog and upcoming book, Around the Table, is all about memories and preserving tradition. The recipe that I would like to submit is my mother’s Viennese chocolate rehruecken cake. Check it out: http://aroundthetable.typepad.com/aroundthetable/2007/02/moms_signature_.html
I look forward to seeing everyone’s stories and recipes.
