So, I was feeling a bit fragile last week and in need of some retail therapy. So, what did I do? Forget buying some cute outfit or snazzy shoes…I got COOKBOOKS!

First up, we have “500 cupcakes” by Fergal Connolly. Honestly, I needed this - how else am I expected to get over my fear of cupcakes?

Next is “Harumi’s Japanese Cooking”, a book which provides detailed, step by step recipes to some favourite Japanese dishes. Apparently, Harumi is Japan’s answer to Delia Smith ;)

Last, but not least, is Jill Dupleix’s “Totally Simple Food”. And having a look through the book, it does indeed have some extremely quick and easy looking recipes which sound great!

Can’t wait to give these a shot. Does anyone who has any of these books have a favourite recipe they can recommend?

I’m not familiar with those, but I must say–those are very pretty coookbooks! I would buy them based on the cover alone. Does that make me shallow?

LOL! Not at all - I have to admit that the pretty covers and photos inside definetely helped to skew my decision towards them ;) Cookbooks are my porn, nothing I love better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a few cookbooks and dreaming of the delights they hold :D

I am totally with you on the cookbook retail therapy, I quite often have accidents where I end up coming home with more books I swear I would not buy - who can resist?

Ahh, Ange, you’re a kindred spirit! One of the bookstores on Swanston St was having a sale a few weeks back and I stood over their cookbook display for about half an hour whilst pining. In the end, I slapped my hand a few times and sternly told myself “NO” whilst walking out the door…

But I’ve got to agree, how can you resist their glossy paged allure? ;)

there’s this place called “books for cooks” on gertrude street, it always makes me think of you when i pass. they have new and secondhand stuff and i think it’s possible that you can trade books you’re finished with that are in reasonable condition ? but i could be making that up.

Yep, I can relate. I purposely snub the cookbook section of my bookstore or I will end up spending money I don’t have. And how embarrassing would it be if I lose my house because of failure to pay the mortgage by way of the cookbook section?? hehee At least now, after 7 years, Hubbs just rolls his eyes when he sees a new book on the table.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the new books you bought so I can’t recommend a recipe. But I can’t wait to see which ones you choose to make - especially from the cupcake book! teeee!

I hear ya! But isn’t it so much fun when you pick up that new book and leaf through it and imagine all of the possibilities!

It looks like you bought yourself some gems!

Gazza - I’ve heard of the bookstore but since I rarely go down Fitzroy way it remains nothing but a name to me :P Might be worth a visit…once I’m working full time again and can afford the habit!

Lis - Oh god I know that feeling…but then sometimes you feel naughty and take glancing looks at the cookbook section, and the next thing you know you’re walking out the door with a new book! LOL, I’m glad your hubby has learned to accept the habit ;)

Ivonne - it definetely is! I haven’t made everything from my current books, but the new book smell and the variations and possibilities it presents…Yum! Hehehe, I hope they do turn out to be gems, I think I’m going to trial the cupcake one tonight :)

I too turn to cookbooks for retail therapy! Amazon is a dangerous, dangerous website when I’m in that frame of mind…

Not familiar with these, but they look very promising!

BNA - I’m a bit scared of Amazon, but I regularly search through Ebay to see if there are any worthwhile buys going ;) Dangerouns indeed! I think they’re promising too - I made something from one of them last night and it turned out amazing!
