Right, well this whole quitting cold turkey thing isn’t going to work - I managed to distract myself from having a bed time cig last night but was cross all evening, and refraining from my morning one has left me trapped away from polite society as I have a very strong temptation to bite anyone who gets too close to me on the hand.

So, some concessions must be made if I’m to have any chance of making it out of this with my sanity intact:

1. I am allowing myself no more than 3 cigarettes a day for the following week, and the week after will be no more than 2 a day.

2. If I get through till Friday night without purchasing a new packet of smokes (current count 5, I had a weak moment yesterday), I will do something nice for myself over the weekend.

3. However, if a moment of extreme mental or emotional stress should arise, I am allowed to have a free pass on extra cigarettes smoked that day (and that day ONLY).

I think this sounds far more doable.

*Trots off to get another glass of ice cubes*

Ooer, not including patches or gum or any other nicorette product or hypnosis, does anyone else have any tips for quitting the cancer candies?

Hi Ellie!

Quittin the cigs huh?

Yeee-ouch! I too have tried and tried. I can actually say I’m not a smoker… but I haven’t fully quit. I have 1 or 2 on the weekends. That’s not so bad, is it? To non-smoking purists of course it is, but to anyone who has smoked - well, I’d bet you’d support my efforts!

The hardest part for me is that sooo many, if not all, of my my friends schmoke. And now, whenever we go out to restaurants, they up and leave me to go outside and smoke together. So I go out for company, and have an inevitable cigarette. Auurghh! :???:

My tip for making a significant cutback is to replace the habit with something entirely new. Food you know inside out. What about… origami? hehe. Or maybe you could get a straw and chew on it? (Oral fixation is my biggest issue!). Or running… ever got into the rush of running? Anything that keeps you hands and minds busy, preferably something that requires your full attention. For me, well I start a job working with children, so the impracticality of it all helped quash my urge to smoke, heh.

I wholly support your step down approach. It aint cheatin’, it’s R E A L I S M !

Good luck!

Lu

Lu, I’ve been doing okay, but my mouth feels a bit numb from continuously sucking on ice cubes to try and quell the cravings :) Will bear the note about the straw for when I don’t have any ice cubes nearby :D

stay away from smokers,

cig, not that much of a problem as I’m usually the only ‘dirty smoker’ of my social groups, except for my best mate who’s also in the process of cutting down
