100 Things

1. I have a golden retriever who is the apple of my eye, and given to me on my 18th birthday to help cope with an almost debilitating depression.

2. Though my main language is English, sometimes I cannot for the life of me remember what a word is in English and my mind just throws jumbled Korean at me.

3. I feel more comfortable and satisfied when swearing in Korean than in English.

4. My ovaries are stuffed. If this continues, it may result in my becoming infertile…but I’m too scared to go back to the Gyno to find out what’s happened since my diagnosis.

5. I’m always attracted to older men - guys my age are fine to have as friends, but lack a je ne sais quois that older men have.

6. I have both a younger brother and sister, and love them both dearly.

7. My dad is a paranoid schizophrenic who has remained medicated since his diagnosis when I was 13. Sometimes, the medication doesn’t help.

8. I am bored to death in my current job, but I don’t pursue my dream job of being a food writer as I’m terrified of failure. Hopefully, this blog will help with that!

9. My core support group is a gang of girls that have been my friends since high school. We fondly refer to our little group as the ‘Stranglies’

10. 3 glasses of wine is enough make me turn as red as a tomato and extremely loud, giggly, and somewhat lacking in a sense of balance.

11. I’ve been smoking for the last 8 years and have tried to quit at least once every year. Obviously, it doesn’t seem to have worked so far.

12. I am a Monty Python addict who can quote nearly every sketch. No, really. It’s a little bit scary and wrong.

13. I am a sad fan of retro and 80’s music, and believe that there’s a little Pat Benatar in everyone!

14. As I grow older, I seem to be developing a mild dairy intolerance. I can no longer drink milk, and can only tolerate moderate amounts of things such as ice-cream, yoghurt…and chocolate :(
15. I rarely wear colour, most of my wardrobe consists of black :/

16. I am currently trying to rectify this situation…and recently bought a pair of calf-high, mint green suede boots.

17. As a child, my favourite after school snack was a sugar-rush sandwich - peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich with sliced banana and a handful of sultanas.

18. I can no longer eat this as it makes my teeth cry.

19. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong decade or century. Girl anachronism, indeed.

20. I would love to be a housewife, as I adore keeping house and looking after my family.

21. I cannot have a shower without washing my hair. I feel disgusting if I don’t give my scalp a good scrub.

22. I dislike baths. If I have a soak in the bathtub, I have to have a shower to ‘clean off’ otherwise I feel icky.

23. I prefer food shopping to any other kind of shopping.

24. I’d be willing to sell my first-born for a KitchenAid mixer.

25. Kidding :P But I would consider it…

26. I have an almost worrying addiction to sweet chilli sauce.

27. I am allergic to one kind of grass. Just one. No idea which it is, but when I’m exposed to it, almost all of my skin breaks out into hives.

28. When I was 14, I came second in a creative writing competition. I’ve never won anything since.

29. The only time I’ve broken a bone was when I was 10 and ran down the wet driveway to check the mailbox…on a Sunday.

30. I find it extremely difficult to watch gorey scenes on tv or at the movies. I spent half of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ with my coat over my head.

32. I currently have 4 tattoos and am planning another one.

33. Despite this, I am still terrified of needles.

37. I cannot go to sleep if my feet are too hot or too cold.

38. The thought of making cupcakes and muffins still makes me freeze with fear.

39. I can’t wear nailpolish as it makes me feel like my nails are suffocating.

40. Likewise with lipstick. In winter, this means I almost constantly suffer chapped lips syndrome.

41. I hate people who argue to try and change my mind because they’re convinced that they’re in the right. I mean, really, I have NO tolerance for it.

42. I can’t handle crowds very well, which makes it difficult to do things like go to markets or large sales.

43. I am the only member of my entire family (including extended) that has not had to have major dental work or that does not wear glasses.

44. I like rubbing this in the face of my brother and sister, as they are both quite a bit taller than me and like to tease me about it.

45. I have teensy feet which makes buying shoes difficult. Despite this, I have a developing shoe fetish.

46. I was one of those girls who was never single. I stopped counting the number of guys I’d dated once I hit guy #30. And that was quite a few years ago.

47. Most of my exes are arseholes.

48. Many of them also seem incapable of leaving me alone and forgetting about me as I requested at the time of break up, even years after the event.

49. My sneeze sounds ridiculous. No really, it’s where my email address came from.

50. I went through a phase where I dyed my hair almost every colour of the rainbow because I hated having plain black hair.

51. Last year I dyed it back to black, and have fallen in love with how silky and healthy it makes my hair look.

52. Getting on public transport makes me fall asleep. Really, it puts me to sleep better than anything else.

53. I quit drinking coffee in January 2005.

54. I think it’s one of the best things for my health that I’ve ever done. Especially since I used to drink 4-5 cups a day.

55. I love starting the day with a glass of fresh carrot and apple juice.

56. My brother thinks I make the best pancakes in the world. I like to believe him ;)
57. My favourite time to bake is late at night…as it’s the only time I have the kitchen to myself.

58. I love sitting in front of the oven to watch baked goods come into their puffy goodness.

59. Once, this resulted in a rock-hard sponge cake…hey, it was 3am and I’d fallen asleep!

60. I cannot go grocery shopping without a shopping list for fear of walking out with half the store.

61. I love going to the home of friends to cook dinner for them :)
62. I’m terrified of moths. I can’t really explain it, except to say that their erratic flight patterns spook me out, and I have this completely irrational fear that they are after my brain.

63. Sometimes whilst I’m asleep, I will do an involuntary kick.

64. My favourite fruit is mango, and in summer I will buy an entire carton and devour one every single day.

65. I can’t stand the smell of celery to the point where if I can smell it in a dish, I lose interest in it. I don’t mind the taste, but it’s the smell which disturbs me. No idea why, just one of those unexplainable things…

66. I believe that technology is out to get me - at work I am constantly having battles with the copier, printer and fax machine. Seeing me standing at any of those machines with a perplexed look and pressing random buttons is a daily event.

67. I don’t like drinking soft drinks or bottled juices. In fact, I rarely drink anything other than water or tea. However sometimes I’ll indulge and have a soy iced/hot chocolate.

68. My favourite teas are green, jasmine and chai.

69. I let my dog sleep under the covers with me in bed as if he sleeps on top he usually falls off the bed multiple times during the night.

70. I love feeding animals as I’m fascinated by how they look when they eat.

71. Once, I was taking a break from study outside the city public library, and sitting outside feeding crumbled cookies to the pigeons. Whilst I was sitting there looking like the bird-feed lady from ‘Mary Poppins’ (pigeons on my head, shoulders, knees, arms and hands), a class of primary school kids and their teacher wandered passed. The teacher asked if she could take a few pictures of me feeding the pigeons with the kids and I said yes.

72. Since having a pigeon take a shit on my skirt, I’ve not invited them onto my hands to be fed. Now, I stick with throwing crumbs to sparrows.

73. I was once approached to pose semi-naked for a painting for a female artist’s gallery exhibition. After much umming and ahhing, I said no, and I must admit that I don’t regret the decision. Nobody needs to see my cellulite butt!

74. I am painfully shy with strangers, and find it difficult to cope when out of my comfort zone and surrounded by people I hardly know. Usually, this results in me trying to hide till some poor soul notices and comes to coax me out.

75. My secret desire is to be a housewife who runs a small business from home, but I don’t tell this to anyone as I think they’d see me as backwards and ridiculous.

76. I am terrified that if I have children, I won’t be able to give them everything they need or won’t be able to bring them up properly.

77. One of the first questions I ask any guy I start dating is whether he likes dogs, and very rarely date those who don’t! Love me, love my dog!

78. I have self esteem issues (well, who doesn’t) regarding various aspects of myself that I am slowly working through.

79. I have put up with a variety of men who have treated me badly because I wanted to feel loved. I have since broken this habit, but I still crave the feeling of being loved.

80. I have a brilliant memory in some respects, and shocking in others. I can remember the names of most of my clients, their secondary contacts as well as ongoing history across a variety of products. However, I can barely remember the my sister and brother’s birthdays, and don’t remember my parents birthdays at all.

81. I get frustrated by people who just talk at me, interrupt me or talk over me constantly. Eventually it makes me shut up and not bother to open my mouth or say a word.

82. Whilst I can easily cry during a movie, I rarely cry in real life.

83. I’ve got a horrible temper - a very long fuse, but when I get mad, I get really mad. However, it usually dissipates quite quickly.

84. I will forgive you almost anything, but in terms of being hurt, I rarely ever forget.

85. I adore my ‘alone’ time, during which I pay attention only to my music, my books or my dog.

86. I’ll only sing out loud properly when I think nobody can hear me.

87. I can’t wait to become a homeowner :)
88. As much as I love food, I hate the thought of working in the service industry. 6 months as a cafe waitress beat that desire out of me :)
89. I will try and avoid leaving the house without makeup at almost any cost.

90. Superficial and shallow people leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

91. Those @#$$&! forwarded emails that say “Send this to 10 people or your great grandmother will come back from the dead and eat your brain” (just an example) infuriate me. So do the people who send them.

92. When walking down the street, I will pause/wave/pet/talk any dogs that I pass. Sometimes, I even kneel on the footpath and give them kisses and cuddles, much to the bemusement of their owners.

93. Other than the strong connection I have with my brother and sister, I’ve never really felt what it’s like to have a family unit, as we never really had family sit down dinners, holidays, trips etc without some kind of ‘incident’ because of my father.

94. I adore being an older sister and taking care of others…but I occasionally wish that I had someone to take care of me.

95. I don’t own a brush, and only brush my hair with a wide-tooth comb straight after I get out of the shower to set my part. Thankfully I have that uber thick and straight Asian hair that doesn’t really tangle.

96. In summer, I love nothing better than lying in my hammock with a glass of home-made iced lemon tea, a cigarette, a good book and my dog.

97. As much as I love and am proud of my Korean heritage, I don’t think I could ever live there again (I lived there from when I was 14-16).

98. I want to win the lottery just so I can buy a house, kit it out with my dream kitchen, then proceed to buy all the cookbooks, utensils, appliances and ingredients that I’ve ever decided. It will probably result in a kitchen bigger than the lounge room :P
99. It’s almost impossible to give me a back massage as the muscles in my shoulders are so tight and tense that the smallest amount of pressure leaves me feeling sore and bruised. It is also impossible to even press your finger into my shoulders because of how tense the muscles are.

100. Sitting down and watching loved ones consume a dish that I have laboured over with gusto gives me more pleasure than almost anything else I can think of :)
